Drosanthemum hispidum
Purple Iceplant
Description
Purple Iceplant is a sub-shrub with succulent looking leaves, It reaches 2' tall and will spread 3' . Foliage is gray green and covered with tiny protrusions that will glitter in the sun. Flowers are dark purple and striking, with 1" diameter heads, blooming in spring and summer. However, it is not a good erosion control plant because it is not a good root "holder". This plant does best in full sun with well draining soil. It is tolerant of ocean spray as well as desert heat as long as it gets additional summer water. Reduce water in winter.

Change spray sprinklers to low-flow bubbler or drip systems. Shrubs and trees are ideal candidates for this type of irrigation because the water is applied directly to the root zones.
